A Bridesmaid’s Guide to Wedding Day

You’ve counted down the days, bought the dress, served the bride-to-be with a smile, and now it’s time to ring the wedding bells. Although the Big Day might be dedicated to the girl with the ring on her finger, it’s also a pretty big day for you. Whether you’re a bridesmaid, maid of honor, or anyone who’s dedicated to honoring the bride, here are some tips and reminders to help you make the best of the wedding day.

Take Care of the Bride

First and foremost, your biggest duty is to support the bride in any way possible. Her headspace will be filled with thoughts, excitement, and worries, so it’s your job to notice where help is needed and provide it.

If you don’t have any official duties, take the initiative to look for ways to help. Does a guest look lost? Point her in the right direction. Does the guestbook table need tidying? Tidy away! If official duties were doled out, stay on top of yours, whether it’s getting people to their seats or handing out a schedule of events. Just remember, it’s the little things that add up and mean so much.

But don’t get upset or offended if the bride doesn’t show her appreciation right away. She’s a big bundle of nerves and may not notice what’s going on behind the scenes. And it’s her and her hubby’s day afterall; don’t make it about your emotions and cause a fuss. Keep a positive attitude and serve with a happy heart.

Take Care of Yourself

It’s just as important to take care of yourself as it is the bride. You don’t want to become the star of one of those fainting bridesmaids Youtube videos, do you?

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and eat something small. It will likely be hours before a full meal is served and you wouldn’t want a grumbling tummy during those quiet moments of the ceremony.

Also, keep alcohol consumption to a minimum, especially before the wedding. There’s nothing worse than a drunk fumble and the embarrassment it might cause. If the bride gives you the okay to drink til you’re silly at the reception, go ahead (if that’s what you want). Otherwise, keep it cool and monitor your intake to avoid face-meets-floor disasters.

Don’t Forget

A few of the most important things you’ll want to have with you when the clock strikes Wedding Day:

  • An emergency kit with things like a small pair of scissors, tissue, bandages, and safety pins inside
  • Camera
  • Hair tools like brush, curling iron, bobby pins
  • Pain reliever
  • Makeup
  • A copy of your speech if you’re speaking at the event
  • Comfy shoes for late-night dancing
